An Overview of Tesla History
The name "Tesla" pays tribute to a renowned inventor and electrical engineer named Nikola Tesla. The company was officially launched in July of 2003 as Tesla Motors and the original owners were two men named Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard. Less than a year later in February 2004, Elon Musk invested $6.5 million to become Tesla's largest shareholder and its CEO in 2008. The first Tesla was built in 2009 and called the Roadster.
Tesla Gets Help From the Alphabet in Naming its Cars
The Model S sedan was unveiled in 2012 and was later followed by the Model X SUV in 2015. The Model Y crossover was introduced in 2020. The Model 3 sedan was first built in 2017 and became the best-selling plug-in electric car in the world. Tesla's worldwide sales reached nearly 1 million in 2021 and by October of that year, the company's market capitalization hit a cool $1 trillion, becoming the sixth company to achieve that in U.S. history.
Tesla Milestones, Controversies and Challenges
Tesla today maintains its headquarters in Austin, Texas and has the most worldwide sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-ins. Tesla Energy supplies battery energy storage systems and had 3.99 gigawatt-hours installed in 2021. The company has faced a number of lawsuits and controversies throughout its history based on allegations of consumer risks and unresolved technical issues with Tesla vehicles but has continued to grow.
